Tomato Floradade

Tomato Floradade

Tomato variety Floradade is a determinate tomato plant known for its robust nature and adaptability to warm climates. Specifically bred to withstand hot, humid conditions, Floradade thrives in Southern regions and areas with high temperatures. This variety produces medium-sized, flavorful, and crack-resistant fruits, making it ideal for fresh eating, cooking, and canning.

Start growing Floradade tomato seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, hardening the seedlings before transplanting them to the garden. Floradade tomatoes prefer slightly acidic to neutral soil with good drainage and should be grown in areas receiving up to 8 hours of sunlight daily.

How to Grow Floradade Tomato:

Sowing:
Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds 1/4" deep, 1" apart in seed trays. Keep the soil moist and maintain a germination temperature of 70–75°F. Once the seedlings develop their second set of leaves, transplant them into individual pots, burying the stem up to the first set of leaves to promote strong root growth. Harden seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions for 7–10 days before transplanting into the garden.

Planting:
Wait until the soil temperature reaches at least 70°F and night temperatures are consistently above 50°F before transplanting. Space plants 18–36″ apart for optimal growth. Floradade tomatoes perform well with or without support but benefit from staking or trellising to prevent fruit contact with the ground, which reduces the risk of pests and diseases.

Companion Plants:
Good companions include basil, carrots, and marigolds, which can help deter pests. Avoid planting near potatoes or fennel to reduce the risk of disease and competition.

Growing Floradade Tomato:

Climate Needs:
This variety is heat-tolerant and performs exceptionally well in regions where temperatures can exceed 85°F. Protect plants from prolonged temperatures below 55°F.

Watering and Mulching:
Water deeply and consistently, approximately 1 inch per week, depending on the climate. Mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning:
Remove unnecessary suckers (small shoots between the main stem and branches) to improve airflow and encourage better fruit production.

Soil Requirements:
Provide slightly acidic to neutral soil with a pH of 6.0–6.8. Incorporate compost or well-rotted manure into the soil before planting to ensure the plants receive adequate nutrients throughout the growing season.

How and When to Harvest Floradade Tomato:

Harvest tomatoes when they are fully red and slightly firm to the touch. Use scissors or garden shears to cut the fruit from the vine to avoid damaging the plant. Floradade tomatoes ripen over an extended period, allowing for multiple harvests. Harvest all fruits before the first frost, as cooler temperatures can damage the fruit. Green tomatoes will ripen if kept in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight.

Floradade Tomato Seed Saving:

To save seeds, select fully ripe tomatoes. Cut them in half horizontally and scoop out the seeds and gel into a container. Allow the mixture to ferment for 2–3 days until a mold layer forms, which helps break down the gelatinous seed coating. Rinse the seeds thoroughly under running water, then spread them out to dry on a paper towel or mesh screen. Stir seeds daily to prevent clumping and ensure even drying. Store dried seeds in a cool, dry place for up to 4 years.

This guide is tailored for growing Floradade tomatoes successfully in a wide range of climates. Enjoy a bountiful harvest of these heat-tolerant, flavorful tomatoes!
