Tall Utah Celery
Delicious, crunchy, and popular, celery grows up to 30 inches tall and has long smooth stems. He has good heart development, strong roots, and good disease resistance. Ripens up to 100 days, is suitable for short seasons, and can be harvested at any time after the stems are at least six inches tall.
Experts believe that it was probably first grown in the Mediterranean basin. In ancient times, celery was prized for its medicinal properties. European chefs have been using it as a condiment since the seventeenth century. It is believed that a Scotsman named George Taylor brought celery to the United States.
This variety does not need blanching. Disease Resistant for Brown Check, Western Celery Mosaic, and Fusarium Race II.

How to grow Tall Utah Celery from seeds:

  • Sowing: Cеlery grows best as a fall crop in most climates; start sowing seeds 10 weeks before the last spring frost. Soak them overnight, then plant them on a flat surface in rows 1″ apart. Moisten the soil and keep them out of direct sunlight. Germination takes place within two to three weeks. Transplant them into pots when they are 2″ tall. Transplant into a garden 6 inches tall after the last frost 6-8″ apart in rows 2-3′ apart. Should enrich the soil with compost or other organic matter. For additional benefits when planting celery, plant tomatoes, cauliflower, or cabbage.
  • Plant Spacing: 6-8″.
  • Growing of Tall Utah Celery: Moisten the plants every week, feed them with compost or fertilizer every two weeks, and remove the weeds. At temperatures below 55 degrees F, cover the plants. The success of growing celery depends on abundant moisture, enriched soil, and protection from heat and sun. For a sweeter and more delicate celery flavor, you can blanch it two weeks before harvest. This is accomplished by wrapping the stems with newspaper to the point where the leaves begin, using planks to protect the branches from the sun or sprinkle earth to cover the stems.
  • Tall Utah Celery Soil Requirements for: Seeds require light to germinate. Keep soil moist and temperatures 70–75°F (21-24°C) if possible, protect from high temperatures and sun.

  • Tall Utah Celery's Seed Saving: For celery to produce seeds, it must overwinter. In cold regions, where the ground freezes in winter, you should dig out the celery before the first severe frosts. Cover the roots with earth, and the stems with straw, store them in a humid place with temperatures close to negative. You should remove rotten and damaged branches in the spring and plant plants after the last frost. In warm climates, celery can overwinter in soil with a thick layer of mulch. When the plant is blooming and producing seed heads in the spring, wait until they turn brown and dry. Then cut them off and dry thoroughly. Store in a cool, dry place.
